Antibiotic Discovery: State of the State

چکیده
D espite increasing resistance among clinically important gram-negative and gram-positive pathogens to many common antibacterial agents, many large pharmaceutical companies are showing decreased interest in this product area that is so critical to public health. This downturn in antibacterial discovery and development, in turn, is leaving us vulnerable to emerging resistance, particularly to recently arrived vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and multiply resistant, gram-negative bacilli for which we do not have adequate antimicrobial therapy in the United States. We believe that such pathogens represent a public health threat whose urgency deserves both regulatory and legislative relief. Dealing with this threat could provide opportunities for larger companies to regain a strong presence in this area. However, action should be taken soon before critical expertise disappears.

Antioxidant and Anti-trypanosomal Activities of the Allium sativum (Garlic) Bulb Aqueous Extract on Trypanosoma Congolense Infected Mice
Background: Trypanosomes cause the parasitic condition, which is transmitted by tsetse fly. The disease is characterized by intermittent fever, anemia, and frequent diarrhea. This study examined antioxidant and anti-trypanosomal effects of the aqueous extract of garlic in mice. Methods: The extract’s phytochemical screening and antioxidant activity were performed based on standard methods. The...

Background and Objective: Asymptomatic bacteriuria is bacteria in the properly collected urine of a patient, leading to a urinary tract infection with no symptoms. Asymptomatic bacteriuria is a common complication in clinical practice with an increasing prevalence due to increase of age. The present study investigated the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria among pregnant women receiving ant...
متن کاملResting-state Functional Connectivity During Controlled Respiratory Cycles Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Introduction: This study aimed to assess the effect of controlled mouth breathing during the resting state using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods: Eleven subjects participated in this experiment in which the controlled “Nose” and “Mouth” breathings of 6 s respiratory cycle were performed with a visual cue at 3T MRI. Voxel-wise seed-to-voxel maps and whole-brain region of i...
متن کاملPublic Health Implications of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Associated with Suya Spices in Nigeria
Background: The emergence and re-emergence of antibiotic-resistant foodborne bacteria call for concerted efforts, especially in developing countries. Spices have been employed traditionally to improve the aroma and flavour of foods; however, they could serve as reservoirs for the spread of potential pathogenic organisms. This study aims to investigate the public health implications of antibiot...

متن کاملMethicillin Resistant Profile of Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Apparently Healthy Students in Edo State University Uzairue
Background and purpose: Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that causes disease in humans due to its pathogenic nature and is more responsible for infections than other Staphylococcus species. Methicillin-resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is resistant to antibiotics and such as penicillins, cephalosporins and their derivatives has β-lactam rings. This study aimed to isolate and investig...
